A local guide to independent living in Mesa
Mesa is the East Valley's largest senior living market, with a long list of assisted living communities, most of them small licensed homes, plus memory care and independent living, and a large seasonal population that shapes the calendar.
Where communities are
East Mesa around Red Mountain and Las Sendas, the Dobson Ranch area to the west, and the stretch along the US 60 corridor hold most of the communities. Gilbert, Chandler, Scottsdale and Phoenix are all close and have their own pages on Seniors Places.
Living in Mesa
Hot summers and busy winters; ask how the community manages outdoor time and transportation in July and August. Banner Desert Medical Center and Banner Baywood serve the city, with the Mayo Clinic campus in north Phoenix within reach. Arizona licenses assisted living homes (ten or fewer residents) and centers separately, each at supervisory, personal or directed care levels, and ALTCS, the state Medicaid program, pays for care for those who qualify.
Choosing well here
With so many small homes on this page, visit at least two of different sizes before deciding. Ask which care level the home is licensed for and how a resident's care is reassessed, since a home licensed below directed care will ask a resident with advancing dementia to move.
