A local guide to memory care in Baltimore
Baltimore and its suburbs have a mature senior living market with a notably large independent living segment, long-established assisted living communities and a cluster of skilled nursing homes, many of them tied to the region's hospital systems and faith communities.
Where communities are
The county suburbs hold most of the communities: Towson, Pikesville and Owings Mills to the north and northwest, Catonsville and Ellicott City to the west, and Columbia in Howard County. Inside the city, Roland Park and the north side have older communities on wooded campuses. Washington, Silver Spring, Rockville, Bethesda, Bowie and Annapolis have their own pages on Seniors Places.
Living in Baltimore
Four real seasons, with humid summers and occasional snow. Johns Hopkins, the University of Maryland Medical Center, MedStar and LifeBridge hospitals are all here, and many communities advertise their affiliations. Maryland licenses assisted living at three levels of care, and a community's licence sets the highest level it may keep; ask which level your parent has been assessed at and which the community holds.
Choosing well here
Ask whether the community can keep a resident through level three care or whether a move will be needed later, and how the entrance fee works at the continuing care communities, which are common in this market. Maryland publishes inspection results through the Office of Health Care Quality; ask for the latest.
