Chicago's market inside the city is weighted toward skilled nursing and supportive living, with a smaller number of licensed assisted living and memory care communities and a large independent living segment that includes many subsidised senior apartments. Illinois' Supportive Living Program, which pays for assisted-living-style care through Medicaid for income-qualified seniors, accounts for a good share of the lower monthly rates you will see on this page.
The North Side (Lincoln Park, Lakeview, Edgewater, Rogers Park) and Hyde Park on the South Side have the city's established communities; the western neighbourhoods such as Galewood and Norwood Park have newer supportive living. The suburbs carry most of the private-pay assisted living: Evanston and the North Shore, Oak Park and the western suburbs, Naperville, Joliet, Elgin and Aurora, each with its own page on Seniors Places.
Cold, snowy winters and humid summers; ask about transportation in winter and how residents reach appointments without a car. Northwestern Memorial, Rush, UChicago Medicine, Advocate and Loyola hospitals are all here. Illinois licenses assisted living and shared housing establishments through the Department of Public Health, separately from supportive living and nursing homes, so the same word can mean three different licences in Chicago.
Ask which licence and which payment programs a community holds before comparing prices, since a supportive living rate and a private assisted living rate are not comparable. In the city, ask about parking and visitor access, and about the building's elevator and backup power in winter.
