Phoenix is one of the largest senior living markets in the country, and the listings here show why: the city has everything from large campuses with independent living, assisted living and memory care on one site to small assisted living homes on residential streets, which Arizona licenses separately for ten residents or fewer. Those smaller homes make up a big share of the Phoenix market and often come with a lower monthly rate and a quieter setting than a full-size community.
Communities cluster in North Phoenix along the Loop 101 corridor, around Arcadia and the Biltmore area, in Ahwatukee to the south, and in the West Valley toward Glendale and Peoria. Many families widen the search to Scottsdale, Mesa, Gilbert and Chandler, each a short drive and each with its own page on Seniors Places.
Summers run well above 100 degrees for months, so ask how a community handles outdoor time, transportation and power outages in July and August. Winters are mild and the snowbird season fills calendars with activities. Health care is a strength: Banner Health, HonorHealth, Dignity Health and the Mayo Clinic all operate hospitals in the metro, and most communities have a preferred hospital and home health partners nearby. Arizona Long Term Care System (ALTCS), the state Medicaid program, pays for assisted living for people who qualify, and many homes accept it.
Decide early whether a ten-bed home or a larger community suits your parent, because the two feel very different day to day. Ask every community which of the three Arizona care levels (supervisory, personal, directed) it is licensed for, since a home that cannot provide directed care will ask a resident with advancing dementia to move. Tour in the afternoon heat at least once.
